Foundational Calligraphy
Learn the essentials of calligraphy, starting with the introductory style called Foundational. For students interested in learning flat-edge calligraphy styles such as Roman, Italic, Uncial, and Gothic, the best place to begin is with Foundational Calligraphy, which is inspired by medieval manuscripts from the tenth century. You will learn all the elements of working with a metal dip pen with a flat-edge nib that creates the beautiful shapes of classical letters. In this class, we will review the tools of the trade and how to prepare them, how to set up your workspace, make the basic shapes, then create letters based on the letter families. We’ll also learn Roman capical letters. The class will end with a final project of the students’ choosing such as a pangram sentence, an alphabet word list, or a text of your choosing.
