Calligraphy Foundations
Learn the beautiful art of calligraphy based on history styles found in medieval manuscripts but modernized for today’s sensibilities. New students will start with Foundational, a style of writing that encompasses all the essentials of learning calligraphy. For students interested in learning flat-edge calligraphy styles such as Roman, Italic, Uncial, and Gothic, the best place to begin is with Foundational. You will learn all the elements of working with a metal dip pen that creates the beautiful shapes of classical letters. In this class, we will review the tools of the trade and how to prepare them, how to set up your workspace, make the basic shapes, then create letters based on the letter families. We’ll also learn Roman capital letters.
Experienced calligraphers will learn a 10 th century writing style still suitable for today – Carolingian. We will learn a modernized Carolingian then transition to historic replicas. The students will create an illuminated letter from the Carolingian era that can be incorporated into a final project with the handwritten lettering they have learned. Materials fee of $30 payable to instructor.
