Uncial: Historic Irish Calligraphy

Beginners and experienced calligraphers will learn the historic lettering style called Uncial, which was born in Greece but is now most associated with Irish culture. We will learn the letterforms, spacing, and layout for these lively, robust letters that have many applications in today’s world. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to create Celtic knots and decorations from the era of the Book of Kells, the most famous medieval manuscript currently housed at Trinity University in Dublin. Intermediate students may try their hand at the archaic lettering style called Insular Half Uncial. This eight-week class will be like taking a journey back to a 9th century scriptorium to study with the monks. Materials fee of $25 payable to instructor.
