Pittsburgh Obama 6-12

Art students in grades 9 – 11 learned about and made comparisons between Japanese, Indian, and African traditions of fabric dyeing and distressing with Resident Artist LaVerne Kemp. Co-sponsored by Fiberart International 2019, students learned how to dye, distress, and stitch their own denim artworks in this unique project.

As part of the learning process, the students were visited by Katsuko Shellhammer, Educational Outreach Coordinator of the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania to learn about traditional Japanese clothing and textiles.
