Opening Reception: “Tales From Craig Street” New Work by Darrin Simmons

Join us for the opening reception of “Tales From Craig Street”, an exhibition of new work from our ceramic artist in residence, Darrin Simmons.

Darrin Simmons is a ceramic artist who makes sculptural vessels and figurative works. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and master’s degree from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. He currently lives and works in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Much of Darrin’s artwork pulls from and references the 90’s era cartoons and comic books that he grew up alongside. The bright colors and exaggerated features prominent throughout much of his work serve as both foil and lure- leading into the weightier subject matter. The work regularly deals with themes of the daily anxieties and stressors of functioning in modern society.

“Tales From Craig Street is about my experiences in Pittsburgh as a recent transplant to the city. I’ve never lived in a town as large as Pittsburgh and wasn’t sure of what to expect. I’ve spent the last few months getting to know the city, the neighborhoods, and the people. I wanted to highlight the daily routines and rituals that have become a major part of my life in Pittsburgh. These little moments of dealing with neighbors, trying to find parking, getting drinks with a friend, are put on display as a record of my time here.”

We hope to see you at the reception on Friday, January 21st from 6:00 – 8:00pm!
