Now Showing: 6th Annual Member & Student Exhibition + 80 Years of Arts Education
Join us as we showcase our 6th Annual Member & Student Exhibition + 80 Years of Arts Education!
In 1945, a cooperative of artist guilds began what was then called the Arts and Crafts Center of Pittsburgh, which planted the seeds of what is now known at Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media.
The Arts and Crafts Center evolved into a larger arts campus with the addition of the Scaife House in 1946. Educational classes and workshops in a wide variety of artistic mediums have been the continuous thread through the years and what the Center became most known for. In our latest incarnation of what began to take shape in 1946, our arts education program is stronger than ever and serves over 3000 students annually.
To celebrate 80 years, PCA&M is featuring ephemera from their historical archives in-part with their 6th Annual Member & Student exhibition, which highlights the talents and creativity of the organization’s members and students throughout a summer-long exhibition.
With this year’s exhibition, we not only recognize legacy as something from the past viewed in the present, but as something on-going, that an entire community has the ability to contribute to.

In addition to all of the incredible work from our members & students, we’re happy to showcase “The River Bridges of Pittsburgh”, a body of work by local photographer, David Lagnese!
David Lagnese recently retired from a 30-year career in Human Resources Consulting. His interest in art began when he studied photography at Allegheny College. The study of bridges in Pittsburgh was his Senior Project in photography.
The photography was done under the direction of Professor Richard Kleeman. A companion history of the bridges was researched and written under the direction of Professor Steven Fenves. Dr. Fenves was the Head of the Civil Engineering School at Carnegie Mellon University. The photographs were made using a Mamiya 35mm film camera. All the developing and printing was done at the Art studios at Allegheny College. Hundreds of images were taken over a one-year period in 1984 and 1985. Dr. Kleeman played a very active role in vetting and refining the composition and printing of the images.
Sadly these images have sat in a box for the past 40 years. David decided to resurrect them by donating them to PCA&M, with the intent that proceeds from their sale will benefit PCA&M.
The prints are available for sale throughout the run of the exhibition. One print costs $100 or you can purchase two for $150! Every sale comes with a copy of David’s book, which further explores the bridges of Pittsburgh!
