Courses
Ceramics & Sculpture
Special Topics: Raku
In this short course, students will focus primarily on surface design through exploring the possibilities of the raku firing process, where pots are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot, then are placed in easily combustable material, such as sawdust or newspaper. This deprives the pot of oxygen, creating various effects within the glaze. Students will spend the first three weeks creating their pieces for the firing, and it is recommended that students have previous experience with handbuilding or throwing on the wheel. The final week, we will glaze our pots and participate in a group firing at the PCA&M raku pavilion. Students will be able to leave with their pieces on the last day of class.
All students must be 18 years of age or older.
