Shadow Drawing: The Art of the Photogram

This fun, hands-on workshop introduces the photogram as a simple and surprising way to make images; no camera or photography experience needed. By placing objects, textures, paper scraps, and collage materials directly onto light-sensitive paper, participants will “draw” with light to create bold, abstract images. Guided exercises will encourage curiosity, trial-and-error, and creative risk-taking as you explore shadow, layering, movement, and scale. Along the way, we’ll look at inspiring examples of artists who have used photograms to experiment with materials and push photography in unexpected directions. The focus is on exploration and discovery rather than technical perfection. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a collection of finished photogram artworks in a range of sizes, and a new way of thinking about what photography can be.
