Intermediate Photography: Process and Play in the Darkroom

Rediscover the tactile, unpredictable magic of analog photography. This eight-week course invites students to explore image-making through experimentation, play, and process. Using handmade pinhole cameras, cameraless techniques, and 35 mm film as both image and material, students will push beyond traditional workflows to engage with light, chemistry, and time as creative tools. Through a balance of guided instruction, open studio time, and discussion, participants will learn alternative printing methods—layering negatives, and hand-altering surfaces. We’ll also look at artists who use experimentation and process as part of their darkroom practice. By the end of the course, each student will create a small body of exploratory prints and gain a deeper understanding of the darkroom as a space for curiosity, transformation, and material play.
