Writing Place

In this class, students will explore and utilize particular techniques for establishing a better sense of “place” in their work. We will practice through mimicry and appropriation at first, then swim out a bit past the breakers and explore our creative urges. Every week students might be asked to read a story or an essay of up to 30 pages a week, consider a critical analysis prompt or two, work with exercises in class, keep an observation journal outside of class, and to share their work if they’re feeling daring. While fiction will be the primary focus of the class, poets and essayists are certainly welcome to attend and practice in their primary genre of choice.
