Raising: An Introduction to Vesselmaking

Raising is a metalsmithing technique transforming a single disc of nonferrous (copper, bronze, or silver) metal into a vessel or hollow form with multiple “courses” of hammering over metal stakes to manipulate the metal. With this technique you can create vases, bowls, cups, sculptural pieces or any object with complex curves. In this course we will transform copper into a drinking cup or bowl and cover many different surface techniques such as bouging, upsetting, annealing, planishing, and some patination. Students will explore the world of raising, and all the possibilities that go along with it.
