Alternative Photographic Processes

An introduction to Alternative Process printing, this course explores photographic processes that were first introduced in the 19th century and continue to be popular in the 21st century. The class will explore the work of contemporary alternative process artists as well as their historical counterparts. Processes examined are Cyanotype, Van Dyke, Salt Printing. Students make enlarged digital negatives (or bring film negatives), mix chemicals from original formulas and hand-coat light sensitive emulsions. Class demonstrations also cover combining different emulsions for multiple printing and toning. Time during class will be given to hone your printing skills. Some photography experience is helpful, but not necessary.
