Ceramic Residency Program
Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media offers one 8-9 month artist residency in ceramics per program year. This opportunity runs from fall (Sept/October) thru spring (April/May). Our intention with the Ceramic Artist-in-Residence program is to continue to expose our immediate ceramic community (both internal and the greater Pittsburgh area) to fresh new perspectives in technique and discipline within the ceramic arts, in turn also helping to create greater visibility for the participating artist. Our program is intended to foster greater community engagement between the resident and other interested parties through:
- Shared studio practice
- Interaction with members & students
- Paid teaching opportunities
- Sales opportunities through our retail shop and markets
- A mid-residency solo exhibition in our gallery space.
Ideally our program is best suited for the emerging ceramic artist that is in need of studio space, equipment use and community for support. Our residency places priority on supporting emerging artists from historically underrepresented groups in the ceramic community. Through our program the resident will learn valuable skills related to managing/coordinating a fast paced community studio that the resident can use to help secure other opportunities after they complete our residency.
Applicants should have a BFA in ceramics or have an established practice and body of work. PCA&M will provide a semi private studio space, access to all PCA&M equipment*, 600 pounds of studio clay, studio glazes and access to all studio firings. PCA&M residents do not pay fees and will receive a modest monthly ($500.00) stipend to help offset weekly living expenses.
Residents are required to work 10-15 hours per week on studio maintenance, present one exhibition and artist talk in January for members and the public, and be an active member of our studio community. Residents should plan to complete one studio improvement project based on their interest and skills.
Applicants should send a resume, artist statement, 10 images of their work, and a letter of intent to Studio Arts Manager Audra Clayton (aclayton@pghartsmedia.org). A letter of intent (1000 words or less) should share what body of work residents plan to develop and exhibit & what skills they are prepared to share.

*PCAM’s ceramic studios are equipped with 3 electric kilns, cone 10 downdraft gas kiln, soda kiln, raku kiln, studio cone 10/6 glazes, spray booth, 2 extruders , 2 slab rollers, glaze lab, 15 shared studio wheels, pug mill, bench grinder, and a photo booth for documentation. Shared residency/manager space has 2 dedicated shelves and a work table for the resident and a shared wheel. Limited access to print/small metals/photography studios, and computer lab.
